Capital accounts and what your statement should show

The line items behind a capital account balance and how to check that a statement reconciles to the underlying records.

The line items

Opening balance, contributions during the period, distributions during the period, allocated profit or loss, and closing balance. Each line should trace to a specific record: a funded capital call, a distribution run, or an allocation entry.

Distribution character matters

A distribution can be a return of capital, a payment of preferred return, or a share of profit. These affect your capital account and your tax position differently, so a statement that shows only a total is incomplete.

Reconciliation

Add contributions, subtract distributions, apply allocations, and confirm you arrive at the stated closing balance. If the statement is generated from source records rather than re-keyed, that arithmetic will hold every period.
